Leave the Headache Behind When Moving With Kids

Storage Disasters - Four Mistakes To Avoid

If you need to rent out a storage unit, getting your items packed and set up correctly the first time around is important. You will need to deal with your storage items again at some point, so make sure that you put some thought into how your storage unit is packed. Here are four mistakes you should try to avoid when packing your storage unit.

1. Not Labeling Boxes

If you are in a rush moving or downsizing, you might just want to get items in storage as quickly as possible. You will thank yourself later on if you have properly labeled all boxes and have organized your unit for easy access. If there are many little items in one box, you can list all of these on the exterior of the box for easy identification later on.

2. Packing Flimsy Boxes

If your storage might be for long-term purposes, your things shouldn't be packed in flimsy cardboard boxes or garbage bags. Invest in sturdy, plastic boxes that are sealable and stackable. Your housewares will last longer and will be easier to access when you need them.

3. Storing Perishables

You might not have much room and want to store dry goods in your storage unit, but this can lead to big issues down the road. You might forget that you found a good sale on dog food and stored this, or put dried coffee or other goods in storage until you need them. If perishable items are something that you might forget about, keep these out of storage since they can attract pests or lead to rotting.

4. Cramming Your Unit Completely Full

You might think that you are getting the best use out of your storage unit by packing it to the gills. If you need to access your unit and will be coming and going with items, this can make it hard to pull what you need. Make sure that you rent a storage unit that is big enough for you to step into and access items easily.

Storing your household items might seem like an easy task, but if you don't give this at least a little bit of thought you might make your life harder than it needs to be. Be organized and have a well thought out plan when it comes to your storage unit. You will be paying to store your things, so try to make an effort to do this with an organized game plan in place.
