Leave the Headache Behind When Moving With Kids

Are You Moving Soon? Organization Can Make Your Move Easier

If you are moving to a new home, you will need to sort through and pack all of your belongings if you wish to find things easily when you get there. Before moving, it would be in your best interest to try to organize your materials so that you or those from the moving company (such as Wheaton World Wide Moving) are not hauling extra things that you don't plan on keeping. Here are some tips to help you organize your move.

Create Working Space

You will want to make a central location in the home that will be used for sorting and piling. In this area, you will want to keep like items together by making separate piles. Your area will include: things to be recycled, things to be given away, things to keep, things to throw away and things to sell. Sort each room separately so you do not get overwhelmed with huge piles you cannot handle. After you remove items you will not be bringing, you can turn the sorting area into a packing area.

The Recycling Pile

Items to recycle would be items that you no longer wish to keep that can be used to make something else, such as glass, paper products, and metal. Some towns have recycling bins available for use. If your town does not offer this service, call your town building to see where they recommend going with your recycling. Sometimes a bin rental service offers recycling. They can drop off a bin to your home to fill with your recyclable materials to be taken away.

The Donate Pile

If you are not going to sell an item, but you no longer wish to keep it, you may be able to donate it to a charity. There are many people who would be happy to take items that are free. Furniture and clothing could go to a thrift store. A library would be able to take books. Ask your friends if anyone is interested in the items you have to give away. You will be surprised at how quickly free items are scarfed up by others.

The Keep Pile

Any item you are going to be moving will need to be packaged appropriately. Make sure to put cushioning around fragile items to keep them safe in the moving van. Label boxes and plastic storage containers with the room that the items will be moving into, as well as the contents inside. Use a black marker to write on your boxes or bins. You could color coordinate your items by writing the information on different colored index cards, and then taping them onto the containers. If you are keeping furniture, leave it where it is until a few days before the move. At that time, disassemble larger pieces and put hardware in a plastic storage bag. Label accordingly and tape the bag to one of the pieces of furniture it belongs with.

Throw Away Pile

Call a bin rental service to rent a bin for your waste. This will be brought to your home and taken away when you are finished with your sorting. You will be able to rent a bin for as long as needed. Take your time and make sure the things you are throwing away will not be used in any way.

The Sell Pile

You may want to try to get a few dollars for items that you no longer wish to keep yourself. If the items hold some value, you can try selling at a yard sale, an online auction or by putting an ad in the newspaper.
